Jason Segel’s mother went into a PR crisis after her son blew the whistle on “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and emailed her entire family about what they would see in the movie.
Segel, 44, opened up about the reaction his mother, Jillian Jordan, had to his full-frontal nude scene in the 2008 comedy. during an interview with Willie Geist, 49, of the “Today” show, on Oct. 20 for a segment of the series called “Sunday Sitdown.”
While looking back on the actor’s career amid the release of season 2 of his Apple TV+ show “Shrinking” Geist mentioned “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and the comedy’s opening scene, in which Segel is completely naked, a scene based on Siegel’s real-life experience of being abandoned while naked.
“It’s a great movie. It had to be very rewarding because, in a way, it was your launch,” Geist told Segel.
“It was pretty cool. But I’ll tell you what the best part was,” Segel responded. “I didn’t tell my mom that I did full frontal nudity. And then I brought her to the premiere.”
Smiling, the star added that her family “will be so mad that I’m going to tell them this story right now because they love your show.”
“My whole family is watching right now.”
Segel went on to explain that, at the premiere of “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” “my parents were sitting next to me and all of a sudden the breakup scene happens and there I am, completely naked, and the audience is gasping.”
“And I look at my mom, waiting for her to laugh, and she’s like beet red.”
“She said, ‘Why didn’t you tell me?’” he recalled. “I said, ‘I thought it would be a funny joke.’ She said, ‘This is not a funny joke.'”
Apparently wanting to warn the rest of her family and prevent them from having the same experience as her watching the film, Segel’s mother sent an email to her relatives shortly after the premiere.
“I would like to inform you that Jason has chosen to do full frontal nudity in his upcoming film,” Segel recalled the email saying. “However, I assure you that it is not gratuitous and essential to the plot.”
Segel shared a laugh with Geist and added, “Hi, Mom. I love you a lot.”
Segel spoke about his mother’s horrified reaction to his full-frontal nudity earlier. telling “Vanity Fair” in 2014 that he “cried” after seeing the scene.
“Shrinking” Season 2 is now streaming on Apple TV+.
