Japan's Senate expels a 'youtuber' senator for absenteeism

March 14 (EUROPA PRESS) –

A disciplinary commission of the Assembly of Japan –Diet– has decided on Tuesday to expel Senator Yoshikazu Higashitani, known ‘youtuber’ under the alias ‘GaaSyy’, for his constant absenteeism, since he has not held the seat at any time since he was elected in July.

“The commission has reached this conclusion after discussing the matter considering the importance of the democratic electoral process (…) ‘GaaSyy’ does not understand the fundamentals of democracy, based on laws and rules”, said the president of this commission of discipline of the Senate, Muneo Suzuki.

The decision has had the unanimous support of the government and the opposition and will become official this Wednesday in a session in the Senate, thus ending the short eight-month political career of ‘GaaSyy’, who has already protested the measure, being contrary to the will of his constituents, reports the newspaper ‘Japan Times’.

This is the first expulsion of a congressman from the Diet since 1951 and the third under the current Constitution drawn up after World War II, according to the Japanese media, who consider ‘GaaSyy’ an anomaly within the country’s politics due to his past. of addictions and debauchery before becoming a ‘youtuber’.

Higashitani, who has not set foot in the Senate since he was elected, has been out of Japan in recent months for fear, he says, of being detained while being investigated for alleged intimidation and defamation of celebrities featured on his channel. YouTube, which was closed after being elected senator.

Its popularity on the Internet, amassing more than 1.3 million subscribers, drew the attention of the NHK party, a populist party that gets its name from the only issue that appeared on its political program, the review of the license rights of the public broadcasting company NHK.

A week ago now, the party changed its name to Seijika Joshi 48. It has two seats in the Senate and Higashitani is expected to be replaced by the third most voted on the list.
