Japan will provide financial support to Ukraine for its reconstruction due to the war with Russia

June 9 () –

The Government of Japan announced this Saturday that it will sign an agreement committing to provide long-term support to Ukraine with a view to contributing to the reconstruction of the country devastated by the conflict unleashed after the Russian invasion.

As revealed by the Japanese news agency Kyodo News, Japan’s support for Ukraine will include “financial aid, efforts to restore vital and industrial infrastructure, including agriculture (…), cooperation in demining and the supply of non-lethal defense material”, in line with the Constitution of the Japanese country, which makes explicit the “renunciation of war”.

In addition, Japanese authorities will establish “intergovernmental talks within 24 hours of any new Russian invasion” with the aim of determining what help can be provided.

The agreement, which will be valid for ten years, is expected to be signed by the leaders of Japan and Ukraine, Fumio Kishida and Volodymyr Zelenski respectively, who will meet next week in Apulia (Italy) during the G7 summit.

The announcement comes after Kishida declared this Thursday at a session of the congressional budget committee that he would lead international efforts to achieve “lasting peace in Ukraine as soon as possible.”

“I will hold frank discussions with other G7 leaders and fully demonstrate (Japan’s) stance of leading the group’s united responses to various problems facing the international community,” said the Japanese prime minister, referring to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and rising tensions in the Middle East.

In May 2023, Japan organized the G7 summit in Hiroshima and invited Zelensky to join the meeting of the group, which also includes the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and the United States, in addition to the European Union.
