The Government of Japan has announced on Tuesday the delivery to Ukraine of 5 million dollars (4.5 million euros) to alleviate the damage caused by the floods after the destruction of the Kajovka dam, in the Kherson region.
The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has indicated that they have supported the work to deal with the damage caused by the floods that have occurred since the collapse of the dam of the Kajovka hydroelectric plant, for which reason they will provide emergency humanitarian assistance through the UN.
Likewise, according to a statement, Japan “will continue to demonstrate leadership” by holding the G7 Presidency and “providing close support to the people, based on Ukraine’s needs.”
“The Ukrainian government, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, has strongly requested assistance in this matter, calling it of great urgency. This assistance represents emergency humanitarian aid that Prime Minister Fumio Kishida conveyed to Zelensky during a telephone chat.” , reads the letter.
The Japanese authorities have estimated the aid to the World Food Program (WFP) at 2 million dollars (1.8 million euros); 1.3 million dollars (1.2 million euros) in aid for water, sanitation and child protection to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF); one million dollars (920,000 euros) in health and essential elements for the International Organization for Migration (IOM); and 700,000 dollars (more than 640,000 euros) for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
Kishida announced this aid package on June 9 in a conversation with Zelensky in which both discussed the situation in the Kherson region after the blowing up of the Kakhovka dam.
The Japanese Prime Minister expressed his solidarity with the Ukrainian people in the face of the “disastrous consequences of the destruction of the dam.” For his part, President Zelenski warned of the consequences of the attack in question, pointing out that the “aggressor caused an environmental and humanitarian catastrophe.” “This can be considered an act of terrorism and another war crime by Russia,” he asserted.
