July 25 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Japanese authorities have confirmed this Monday the first case of monkeypox in the country and have detailed that it has been confirmed in the area of the capital, Tokyo, two days after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the disease as a public health emergency of international concern.
The confirmation has come from the Ministry of Health, as indicated by the Japanese television network NHK. Government sources quoted by the Kyodo news agency have highlighted that the patient is a man in his 30s who lives in Tokyo.
The director general of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, made the decision on Saturday after understanding that the outbreak meets all the necessary requirements for it, despite the fact that the group of experts of the UN agency, in charge of evaluating the crisis , has not yet reached a consensus on this issue.
Monkeypox is a viral zoonosis, that is, a disease caused by a virus transmitted from animals to people, which produces symptoms similar to those observed in smallpox patients in the past, although less severe, according to the report itself. WHO on its website.
