But the plan did not bring the expected results. In the third quarter of 2024, Izzi lost 24,674 clients, while Totalplay only added 115,000. A situation contrary to that of Telmex, which in the same period added 800,000 users, according to the company’s financial data, placing itself as the operator to pay more clients in that period.
The new dynamism that Telmex has taken is associated with the strategy of increasing internet bandwidth and giving away streaming accounts without this meaning price increases.
Francisco Valim, CEO of Izzi and Sky, assured that Telmex’s strategy did not affect his companies because its packages were similar to those offered by Carlos Slim’s company. But recently, Izzi was forced to increase the bandwidth of its internet service, without this implying an increase for consumers, in order to confront Telmex. Totalplay and Megacable have done the same.
Analysts had warned that Telmex’s ‘freezing’ of prices would end up impacting competitors such as Izzi, Totalplay and Megacable who, unlike the América Móvil subsidiary, increase the costs of their services at least twice a year.
Although operators have emulated Telmex’s tactics, they have not had the expected results and this could be due to the internal changes that the companies have had.
Izzi, for example, is going through a restructuring to merge with Sky in order to create a new player, but this has implied changes in services, bringing with it effects to users.
Totalplay is another company that faces changes such as a decrease in its investment levels and expenses, without specifying the percentage, to strengthen the company’s liquidity and amortize “a significant portion of future debt maturities,” according to financial information from the company. company. But this has translated into lower user growth.
While Telmex has another story. A year ago it faced the constant loss of users comparable to the one it is now adding due to the decrease in investment to improve and expand its fiber optic network, bringing with it problems in its services.
However, the company has corrected this part by increasing the capital injection. Only in the third quarter of this year, Telmex invested 4,950 million pesos, meaning an increase of 122% compared to the 2,221 million pesos in the same period of 2023, bringing with it an advantage for the quality of its services, compared to its competitors. .
