Ivory Coast: victims of toxic waste spill continue to demand justice

An environmental tragedy that occurred 18 years ago continues to shock Ivory Coast. In 2006, the company Trafigura wanted to get rid of 500 cubic meters of toxic waste from the refining of petroleum products stored on its cargo ship Probo Koala. After four months at sea and after three countries rejected the ship, it finally left its cargo in the Ivory Coast. With the approval of the authorities, a local company was responsible for dumping waste around the town of Abidjan, affecting at least 100,000 inhabitants and causing several deaths. Eighteen years later, many are still crying out for justice. A report by Julia Guggenheim, Damien Koffi, Flore Monteau, Tom Canetti and Lauren Bain.
