Italy's culture minister resigns after hiring his 'influencer' lover as an advisor

The Italian Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiulianopresented his “irrevocable resignation” on Friday after days of controversy over the case of an ‘influencer’ with whom he had an emotional relationship and who alleges that he performed advisory tasks, in a controversy that has splashed the Government of Giorgia Meloni.

According to local press, the Italian head of state, President Sergio Mattarellaaccepted Sangiuliano’s resignation and met with Meloni this afternoon, who proposed Alessandro Giuli, known in Italy for his career in journalism and as a television personality, as a replacement for the Culture portfolio.

“Dear President, dear Giorgia, after having thought for a long time, in painful days and filled with hatred towards me on the part of a certain political and media system, I have decided to resign irrevocably as Minister of Culture,” Sangiuliano said in a statement.

Sangiuliano admitted on television on Wednesday that he did indeed have a love affair with the influencer and apologized to his wife and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who rejected his resignation on Tuesday.
