Italy raises alert level to maximum after Stromboli volcano eruption

5 Jul. () –

Italy’s Civil Protection Department raised the alert level to the maximum on Thursday due to a new eruption of the Stromboli volcano, located on the island of the same name in the south of the country.

“The approval of the alert level is based on the phenomenology reports and hazard assessments made available by the centres of competence,” reads a statement published by the aforementioned office on its website.

The alert level, which has gone from orange to red and has activated the pre-alarm operational phase, allows the activation of the local level of civil protection in the advanced operations centre, which will have the support of experts from the national office to ensure cooperation with the operational structures involved.

Local authorities have asked the island’s population to stay informed and to “scrupulously” follow the instructions of civil protection, “regardless” of volcanic phenomena, which “may have frequent variations” but “a situation of imbalance persists.”

Mount Stromboli is about 920 metres high and erupts frequently. The island is home to around 500 people, but is a tourist hotspot for those travelling from mainland Italy or Sicily to climb the volcano.
