Italy confirms Zelensky's participation in the G7 summit to be held from June 13 to 15 in Puglia

ROME, June 2 (DPA/EP) –

A spokesperson for the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, confirmed this Saturday that the President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelensky, will participate in the G7 summit that will take place in the Apulia region (Italy) between June 13 and 15.

However, the Italian authorities have not confirmed whether the Ukrainian president will intervene in person at the meeting or if, on the contrary, he will do so electronically, by videoconference.

In recent months, Zelensky has personally attended high-level talks on several occasions in order to reinforce international support for Ukraine in the context of the conflict arising from the Russian invasion of February 24, 2022.

Although last year he already attended the G7 summit, held in the Japanese city of Hiroshima, kyiv has not yet confirmed or denied that the leader of the Ukrainian Executive is going to travel to Italy on the indicated date. As a general rule, the Ukrainian government does not usually announce official trips abroad in advance for security reasons.

The G7, chaired by Italy since the beginning of the year, is an informal forum of the leaders of the main democratic industrialized countries, made up of Germany, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, Japan, Canada and the United States.

At its next meeting, the G7 will also have the presence of Pope Francis for the first time, who according to Meloni, will participate “in the session dedicated to artificial intelligence.”
