Italy announces the reinforcement of security in all diplomatic headquarters abroad

30 Jan. () –

The Italian Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, has announced that security will be strengthened in all diplomatic headquarters abroad after the incidents in Athens, Barcelona and Berlin.

“I will inform the Council of Ministers about the measures adopted by the Foreign Ministry to guarantee the security of all our diplomatic headquarters, of all our diplomats and to guarantee the security of the Foreign Ministry itself,” Tajani pointed out in statements to the press from Florence collected by the AdnKronos news agency.

“We have asked the Carabineros of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to reinforce the security of our diplomatic and consular headquarters around the world, especially where greater risks are feared,” he added.

Tajani has acknowledged that he is “concerned” by these “attacks”, “but that does not mean that the Government is willing to deal with those who use violence (…). Violence cannot be used against institutions and the forces of order”, he stressed.

The Italian Consulate in Barcelona was attacked on Saturday and a window of the building was broken. In addition, a protest graffiti was made in favor of the anarchist prisoner Alfredo Cospito, who has been on a hunger strike for three months.

On December 2, the vehicle of the first counselor of the Italian Embassy in Athens, Susanna Schlein, was set on fire, and later another diplomatic vehicle was set on fire in Berlin.
