Italy and Libya sign an unprecedented agreement for the extraction of gas and oil in front of Tripoli

Jan. 28 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, is this Saturday in Tripoli, in Libya, where the signing will take place between the Italian oil company ENI and the Libyan national hydrocarbons company (NOC) to ensure the country’s oil and gas supply African to Italy

According to the newspaper ‘La Repubblica’, the details have been finalized to close one of the largest investments made in Libya in the last 25 years, since, according to negotiations, the Italian ENI will invest up to 8,000 million dollars (7,358 million euros) to commission two gas fields off the coast of Tripoli.

This fact will reactivate the hydrocarbons energy sector in Libya — which is its main source of income –, in addition to providing Italy with at least 1,100 million additional cubic meters of gas from 2026, thus taking another step in its wishes to replace Russian gas.

Thus, the signing is scheduled for this Saturday, January 28, in Tripoli between the CEO of ENI, Claudio Descalzi, and the President of the Libyan National Oil Corporation (NOC), Farhat Bengdara.

As the Italian agency Nova has been able to advance, Meloni will visit Libya this Saturday accompanied by the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, and the head of the Interior portfolio Matteo Piantedosi.

The Italian delegation will meet in the Libyan capital with representatives of the Libyan Government headed by Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibé and will witness the signing between the two companies.

In addition to supporting the Libyan energy sector, both sides are expected to start talks to join forces in order to restore Libya’s political stability and cooperate jointly on illegal immigration.
