The growing tension between Ukraine and Russia is leading the countries of the Old Continent to develop plans and prepare their population for a eventual war escalation.
Last week, the swedish government sent its citizens a manual on how to act in the event of a military attack, an energy crisis or a nuclear catastrophe. Now, it is the German Executive that is making moves in a context of growing international threats.
According to the Ministry of the Interior, the Government is preparing a new emergency plan since currently the country only It has 579 public places of civil protection or shelters for 480,000 people.
At the Government’s regular press conference, Interior spokesman Mehmet Ata explained that this plan seeks to develop an list of buildings and also private properties that can serve as shelter, which includes underground parking lots, basements, subway stations, among other places.
It also proposes a digital directory that allows citizens to find the nearest shelter through maps and notices, as well as guides with recommendations for new basement construction, for example, in which citizens can protect “themselves”, in addition to a global information campaign.
This work is based on the elements agreed by the federal and state interior ministers last June for a national shelter concept.
A joint working group is currently developing the plan, which is based on the emergency scenarios outlined by the federal government in 2003 for the application of civil protection, he added. The work will still take time, Ata said, as it is a large and comprehensive project.
Ata admitted that at the national level there is currently an insufficient number of public shelters throughout the country, explaining that originally there were about 2,000 in Germany, which has about 84 million inhabitants, of which there remain “579 with 480,000 places.”
