On the eve of making it official, Spain, Ireland and Norway staged their alliance this Monday to simultaneously recognize the State of Palestinewhich has unleashed the fury of the Government of Benjamin Netanyahu. They have done it with a joint press conference of their Foreign Ministers, Jose Manuel Albares, Michael Martin and Espen Barth Eide at the Spanish embassy to the EU in Brussels.
The three countries maintain that this initiative It is not a reward for Hamas’ “terror”, but on the contrary will constitute the “best guarantee of security” for Israel. In addition, they hope that other countries in the European Union will join, although so far their announcement has not translated into a cascade of accessions.
Spain, Ireland and Norway have condemned the Hamas attack in Tel Aviv, as well as the Israeli bombings in Rafahwhich, according to what they have said, contravene the order of the international Court of Justice that requires stopping them. Albares has also expressed again his displeasure at the attacks by the Netanyahu government against the three countries since they announced the recognition of Palestine, although they have not announced any retaliatory measures.

“We have agreed that we will not fall into any provocation that takes us away from our goal. Our objective is to recognize the State of Palestine tomorrow, to make all possible efforts to achieve a permanent ceasefire as soon as possible and also in the end to achieve that definitive peace,” explained the head of Spanish diplomacy.
Albares has insisted that the precautionary measures issued by the International Court of Justice “are mandatory for all parties.” “Israel must stop its offensive in Rafah. “In the same way and with the same forcefulness that we condemn the launch of rockets by Hamas towards Israel,” he noted.
“The three of us have been saying for months that we are concerned that Israel’s style of war in Gaza could violate international humanitarian law. Now we know, because there has been a mandatory order from the International Court of Justice requiring Israel to stop its attack on Rafah,” says the Norwegian Foreign Minister.
“This order is binding, which means that continuing the war in Rafah violates a decision of the highest court in the world. We expect Israel to comply with international law and it is up to the UN Security Council to intervene if there is a flagrant violation of international law,” said Barth Eide.
“The three countries share the vision that The time has come to make the two-state solution effective in which we believe, like the rest of the international community, as the best way to achieve what we all long for: definitive peace in the Middle East,” Albares explained in his capacity as host of the meeting.
“The State of Palestine, its recognition, is justice for the Palestinian people, it is the best guarantee of security for Israel and is absolutely essential to achieve peace in the region,” insists the Spanish Foreign Minister.
“Some have framed our decision to recognize the State of Palestine as a move to impose a certain outcome on the parties or as a kind of reward for terror. Nothing could be further from the truth. We have recognized both the State of Israel and Palestine precisely because we want to see a future of normalized relations between the two peoples,” said the Irish Foreign Minister.
