Israel's defence minister regrets British decision to suspend 30 arms sales permits

September 3 () –

Israel’s Defence Minister Yoav Gallant on Monday deplored the UK government’s decision to suspend 30 of the 350 arms export permits currently in place for Israel, citing a “clear risk” that the equipment could be used to commit “serious violations of international humanitarian law.”

“Deeply disheartened to learn of the sanctions imposed by the UK Government on Israel’s defence export licences. This comes at a time when we are fighting a war on seven different fronts, a war that was launched by a savage terrorist organisation, without provocation,” Gallant posted on his X social media account.

In this regard, he stressed that this decision has come at a time when they are “mourning” the “cold-blooded execution” of six hostages inside the tunnels in the Gaza Strip and while they are “struggling” to rescue the remaining 101 hostages.

“I stand with our troops and security agencies who work with immense courage, professionalism and moral values. We remain committed to defending the State of Israel and its people,” he added.

British Foreign Secretary David Lammy announced the measure, saying it was “not an arms embargo” in retaliation for the military offensive launched on the Gaza Strip. He did point out that in conflicts of this type, London has a “legal obligation” to review each case individually.
