An Israeli soldier has died this Tuesday after being shot near a settlement in the north of the West Bank, an incident that has taken place within the framework of a march held by dozens of settlers in the surroundings of the West Bank town of Sebastia.

The Rescuers Without Borders medical service has previously indicated that the soldier had been evacuated to a hospital, without giving details about his condition. Later, the medical staff of the Kfar Saba hospital confirmed his death.

The Israeli Army, which had previously confirmed the shooting, has assured on its official Twitter profile that “terrorists have fired from a vehicle at soldiers who were carrying out an operational activity to secure the area and protect residents.”

According to information collected by the newspaper ‘The Times of Israel’, the deceased soldier was part of a security deployment within the framework of the march, while the armed group calling itself ‘Lion’s Den’ has claimed responsibility for the attack.

This group, based in the city of Nablus and made up of alleged former members of the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade – Al Fatá’s armed wing – and Islamic Jihad’, has claimed responsibility for several attacks in recent months in the West Bank.

This new group would maintain ties with Ibrahim Nabulsi, a senior member of the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade who was killed in October in an operation by the Israeli security forces in the West Bank city of Nablus.

At the end of September, the Israeli authorities put the security forces on high alert in view of the celebration of the next Jewish holidays –Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Sukkot–, while the Islamic Resistance Movement ( Hamas) warned about the “repercussions” that visits by Jewish faithful to the Esplanade of the Mosques would have during these holidays.
