Army reservists threaten to retire if judicial reform goes ahead
June 27 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The organizers of the protests against the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his judicial reform have called on Tuesday to block access to Ben Gurion Airport in the framework of new protests scheduled for Monday.
Shikma Bressler, one of the organizers, has thus pointed out that the marches and blockades carried out weekly in the country “are not enough” and “could become a daily event”.
“We promise those who are destroying the state that there will be surprises,” he said, referring to Netanyahu and Justice Minister Yariv Levin. “All the groups that participate will exercise the resistance according to their own judgement,” he pointed out, according to information from the newspaper ‘The Times of Israel’.
This same Tuesday, hundreds of Israeli Air Force reservists have assured that they will refuse to serve if the reform goes ahead. Thus, they have signed a letter in which they warn that they will stop offering themselves as Army volunteers if the Government does not stop this measure.
The reservists, a key figure in the ranks of the Israeli army, have once again threatened the government as it presses forward with its efforts to pass the reform. “As long as unilateral steps continue to be taken to end the democratic regime, we will stop offering ourselves as volunteers,” the letter states.
Israel has experienced numerous protests against the judicial reform promoted by Netanyahu, whose objective is to give control of the Judicial Appointments Committee to the government party or coalition, which could also order the dismissal of judges in all courts, since the aforementioned body has authority for this, without the need for a consensus with the representatives of the judicial apparatus.
