The Israel Police have confirmed the shooting death this past Friday night of a Muslim in an altercation under investigation that occurred in the Old City of Jerusalem, in full commemoration of Ramadan.
The deceased has been identified as a 26-year-old Bedouin, Mohamed Elasibi, a native of the city of Hura, in southern Israel and, according to an initial version of the Police disputed by several witnesses, died trying to snatch the weapon from an agent. .
In contrast, witnesses from the Palestinian agency Maan, as well as from the Israeli newspaper ‘Yedioth Aharonoth’, point out that the young man died while trying to protect a woman who was being harassed by the Israeli security forces.
“He intervened to help her and they shot him without any need,” lamented one of the witnesses of the Israeli newspaper.
The woman has been identified by Maan as a Palestinian who was being reduced by the Police when she tried to enter the Esplanade of the Mosques through the Gate of Chains.
Jerusalem security forces have been on high alert for days during Ramadan commemorations, especially on Fridays, when some 150,000 Muslims flock to their commemoration on the esplanade to pray.
