June 7 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The day before, the Israel Police arrested Saif Kwasmi, a Palestinian journalist who was attacked during the Flag March in the Old City of Jerusalem by a group of radical young people while he was carrying out photographic coverage for Jerusalem Day.
As revealed by the Israeli newspaper ‘Haaretz’, the Israeli Police detained the journalist after receiving a complaint from a well-known right-wing activist about his membership in the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas).
The agents confiscated his equipment and noted that the journalist, who was detained for about an hour, did not have valid accreditation to practice his profession in Israel. The Police have also reported, according to the aforementioned media, that “there is no connection between the incident in which he was attacked and his subsequent arrest.”
The Israel Police arrested 18 people the day before in the context of the riots that broke out due to the Flag March, which runs through the Muslim neighborhood of the Old City and in which chants against the Arab population are usually recorded.
The march is organized by far-right and religious organizations to commemorate the “unification” of Jerusalem and the taking of the Old City, including the Esplanade of the Mosques – known to Jews as the Temple Mount – during the Six-Day War in 1967, a fact not recognized internationally.
