The Palestinian Authority’s Health Ministry reported on Wednesday the death of a young Palestinian in the West Bank city of Jenin, amid an increase in incursions by Israeli troops in the West Bank since the attacks carried out on October 7, 2023 by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) against Israeli territory.
The deceased was identified as Nidal al-Amer, 23, according to a brief statement from the ministry posted on its Facebook profile. Medical and security sources told the Palestinian news agency WAFA that a special army unit “executed the young man” in “cold blood” and “from a distance” after he entered the city’s industrial zone in a civilian vehicle with Palestinian license plates.
Al-Amer is the son of one of the leaders of the Palestinian National Liberation Movement (Al-Fattah), Ziad al-Amer, who was killed in the city’s refugee camp during the Battle of Jenin in April 2002 as part of the Israeli military operation ‘Defensive Shield’. According to the UN, Israel killed 52 Palestinians in total, both militants and civilians. On the Israeli side, 23 soldiers were killed in combat.
Israeli army operations and attacks by Israeli settlers in the West Bank and East Jerusalem have left more than 560 Palestinians dead since the escalation of such actions since October 7, when the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) carried out an assault that left 1,200 dead and 240 hostages. Palestinian authorities in the Gaza Strip have since counted more than 37,900 dead from Israeli attacks.
