The Israeli army on Friday carried out a new bombing against a “terrorist squad” in the West Bank city of Jenin, as part of its large-scale operation launched on Wednesday in the north of the West Bank, which has so far resulted in more than 15 Palestinian deaths.
“A drone has attacked a terrorist squad during a confrontation with security forces in Jenin,” the army said in a brief message posted on its website, without providing details on the group to which they belong or on possible fatalities.
According to information gathered by the Palestinian news agency WAFA, the attack was carried out against a vehicle in the town of Zababdeh, located south of Jenin. The Palestinian Red Crescent has denounced that the Israeli forces prevented its ambulances from reaching the scene of the incident to treat the victims.
The United Nations on Wednesday criticised what it described as an “increasing military response” by Israel in the occupied West Bank, stressing that such operations “violate international law and risk worsening an already explosive situation.”
The UN Human Rights Office has stressed that “violence between Israeli security forces and Palestinian gunmen in the West Bank does not constitute an armed conflict under humanitarian law, and the use of force in the West Bank must therefore be in accordance with human rights norms and standards applicable to security operations.”
“The use of bombing and other military weapons and tactics by Israel’s security forces violates these standards and results in extrajudicial executions and other killings, as well as the destruction of Palestinian homes and infrastructure,” he said, warning that the situation “could worsen dramatically if Israel’s security forces continue to systematically use lethal force and ignore violence perpetrated by settlers.”
Israeli army operations and attacks by Israeli settlers in the West Bank and East Jerusalem have left more than 660 Palestinians dead since the escalation of such actions since October 7, when the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and other Palestinian factions carried out an assault on Israeli territory that left some 1,200 dead and nearly 240 kidnapped.
The Israeli army has also launched a large-scale military offensive against the Gaza Strip in response to these attacks, which has so far left more than 40,600 Palestinians dead and nearly 94,000 wounded, according to the latest figures provided by the authorities of the enclave, controlled by Hamas.
