TEL AVIV, 21 Sep. (DPA/EP) –
A ceremony in memory of the 11 Israeli athletes who died in a Palestinian terror attack during the 1972 Munich Olympics will be held in Tel Aviv, Israel, on Wednesday.
The ceremony, which coincides with the 50th anniversary of the massacre according to the Hebrew calendar, is expected to be attended by Israeli President Isaac Herzog and International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach, as well as relatives of the victims.
On September 5, 1972, a group of Palestinian terrorists took 11 Israeli team members hostage in the Munich Olympic village in an attempt to secure the release of 230 Palestinians from Israeli custody.
In the course of events, all 11 hostages died, although most in the failed rescue attempt by German security forces. Five of the eight Palestinian terrorists were also killed.
After decades of negotiation, the families of the Israeli victims reached a compensation agreement with the German government for a total of 28 million euros just three weeks ago.
