Israel says Monday's Beirut bombings targeted Hezbollah 'weapons manufacturing sites'

The Israeli Army detects the launch of projectiles from southern Lebanon against northern Israel and confirms impacts

Oct. 1 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Israeli Army has affirmed this Tuesday that the objective of the bombings carried out late on Monday against the capital of Lebanon, Beirut, were “weapons manufacturing sites” and “military infrastructure” of the Shiite party-militia Hezbollah, attacks carried out hours before the start of their invasion of the neighboring country.

Thus, he stressed that fighter jets “attacked several Hezbollah weapons manufacturing sites and other military infrastructure in the Dahiye neighborhood” and stated that “before the attack, steps were taken to reduce the possibility of causing damage to those who are not involved”.

“Hezbollah consciously installs its production sites and means of war under the heart of the city of Beirut and hides them in populated areas of the city,” he argued, according to a statement published through his account on the social network X.

In this sense, the Israeli Army has insisted that it “continues to attack with force to damage and destroy Hezbollah’s military capabilities and infrastructure with the aim of guaranteeing the restoration of the security of the State of Israel and its citizens.”

On the other hand, he confirmed the launch of at least five projectiles from Lebanon against the Metula area and said that “some of them were intercepted.” “Impacts have been detected in the region,” he stressed, with no information on victims or damage at the moment.

Furthermore, he pointed to an undetermined number of launches minutes later against Avivim and Metula and stressed again that “some were intercepted”, although he also confirmed impacts. On these occasions, it has not commented on possible victims or damages.

The Israeli Army announced during the early hours of this Monday a new invasion of Lebanon and has stated that it is a “selective and limited” operation against “terrorist targets and infrastructure” of Hezbollah, arguing that they pose “an immediate and real threat to Israeli settlements on the northern border.

Hezbollah, for its part, has claimed to have caused casualties against Israeli forces in the neighboring towns of Adaise and Kafarkila, both in the southeast of the country and which practically border Israel. Islamist militants have also launched an artillery attack against a group of soldiers in the Israeli settlement of Shtula.

It should be noted that the Lebanese Army had withdrawn up to five kilometers from the border just a few hours before the ground operation, although it justified this decision as a form of redeployment of its forces, according to the Lebanese state news agency NNA.

The announced offensive is part of Operation ‘Northern Arrows’, the military campaign that began a little over a week ago against Hezbollah targets and will take place “at the same time as the fighting in Gaza and other areas.” Israeli attacks have increased since mid-September and have killed a large part of Hezbollah’s leadership, including its secretary general, Hassan Nasrallah, who died last Friday in a bombing in Beirut.
