Israel reaffirms its decision to veto the UN secretary general

The Government of Israel has assured this Saturday that it will not reverse its decision to declare the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, as ‘persona non grata’ and to veto his entry into the country, after more than one hundred states have supported the UN representative.

“According to a survey carried out, 87 percent of the population in Israel supports the decision. Guterres can continue trying to collect signatures of support from UN members; the decision will not change,” warned Foreign Minister Israel Katz. in a message published on his social network account X.

These words come after 105 countries, including Spain, published this Friday a letter of support to the Secretary General of the United Nations highlighting his “essential work to foster dialogue and promote peace and understanding.”

The letter announced this Friday responds to the declaration of Guterres as ‘persona non grata’ in early October by the Israeli authorities on the grounds that he had not condemned Iran’s recent large-scale attack on Tel Aviv.

In particular, the Israeli authorities criticized Guterres for not distinguishing between the aggressor and the victim of the missile attack that Tehran carried out against Israel on October 1.
