Israel mulling Hamas response to Gaza ceasefire proposal

3 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Wednesday that it is studying a response from the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) to the proposal for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of hostages held in the Palestinian enclave put forward by international mediators.

“The mediators in the agreement to release the hostages conveyed to the negotiating team Hamas’ response to the proposed agreement,” the office said in a brief message posted on the social network X.

The Palestinian militia responded on June 11 to the ceasefire proposal presented by US President Joe Biden at the end of May, although it suggested a series of changes that were criticized by Washington.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has questioned whether Hamas was “acting in good faith” by proposing a series of new demands that he said “go beyond the positions they had adopted at the beginning” of the negotiations.

Biden’s plan is divided into three phases: the first involves an exchange of hostages for prisoners and a short-term ceasefire, while the second envisages a “permanent cessation of hostilities” and the complete withdrawal of Israeli military forces from Gaza. The third and final phase includes a multi-year reconstruction plan for the Gaza Strip.

Hamas has agreed to accept the deal, provided that Israeli troops withdraw completely from the Palestinian enclave, while Israel has made it clear that it will continue its offensive to destroy the Palestinian militia.
