An Israeli Armed Forces excavator destroyed this Saturday a border marker installed by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and a Lebanese Army observation post on the Lebanese side of the border, according to UNIFIL itself.
The peacekeeping mission has highlighted that UNIFIL troops have witnessed this “deliberate and direct” destruction of “clearly identifiable UNIFIL property” and the Lebanese military observation turret “in flagrant violation of Resolution 1701 and of International Law”.
“We urge all actors to avoid actions, such as the destruction of civilian property and infrastructure, that could jeopardize the cessation of hostilities,” UNIFIL said.
Israeli forces maintain their presence in southern Lebanon in accordance with the ceasefire agreement reached between the parties, which provides for the Israeli withdrawal at the end of January, coinciding with the deployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces in the area.
