Israel bombs underground tunnel in southern Lebanon leading to Hezbollah headquarters

MADRID Dec. 18 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported this Wednesday that they had carried out an attack against an underground network of tunnels in southern Lebanon that led to a headquarters of the Lebanese Shiite militia party Hezbollah, from where the group would have directed “many” attacks against Israel.

The operation, which has been carried out by the 188th Brigade of the IDF, has served to locate weapons, observation systems and other military equipment in the facilities that Hezbollah used “to direct terrorist activities in the area”, as detailed by the IDF themselves. Israeli military authorities on their website.

Likewise, in the vicinity of the aforementioned headquarters, several weapons warehouses had been arranged, one of which was located inside a mosque. There Israeli troops have located “hundreds of explosives, firearms, grenades and other military equipment.”

Israel and Hezbollah agreed several weeks ago on a ceasefire pact for the cessation of hostilities and the withdrawal of both from southern Lebanon, where the regular Lebanese Army must take positions to guarantee the security of the Israeli State. However, both sides have accused each other of reneging on the agreement.

Hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel intensified after the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023 – which left almost 1,200 dead and 240 hostages – and the subsequent Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip, which this Monday has already surpassed. 45,000 dead and around 107,000 injured.

The toll of victims from the conflict in Lebanon is notably lower, as the Lebanese authorities have reported nearly 4,000 deaths. In both conflicts, Israel has managed to eliminate a large part of the political and military leadership of Hamas and Hezbollah, such as the Palestinians Yahya Sinwar and Ismail Haniye, or the Lebanese Hasan Nasrallah.
