June 26 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The special envoy of the United States Department of Energy, Amos Hochstein, has transferred to Israel a negotiation offer from Lebanon to resolve the dispute between the two countries over tensions in the Karish offshore gas field.
Lebanon, right now in a huge economic crisis, has denounced the presence of an Israeli ship in waters it claims as its own, while Israel says the field is part of its exclusive economic zone recognized by the UN.
In addition, the Israeli government is also seeking to exploit the Karish field as part of its efforts to position itself as a supplier of natural gas to Europe.
“The Israeli team has listened to what happened during the mediator’s visit to Lebanon, and the parties discussed formulating a constructive direction so that the negotiations can move forward while preserving Israel’s economic and security interests, with the intention of reaching an agreement on the issue in the near future”, according to the Israeli statement collected by the ‘Times of Israel’.
Among the solutions contemplated by Beirut, raised earlier this month, is the possibility of abandoning its claims to Karish in exchange for gaining full control of another field, Qana, which also straddles Beirut’s economic zones. these countries.
