The Nintendo Switch has been king of Japan practically since its debut, since week after week it outsells its competitors. However, last week was the exception, because neither with the new game of Bayonetta managed to outsell PlayStation 5.

You read that right, the PlayStation managed to make a statement in Japan and dropped the Nintendo Switch to second place. To give context, we told you that the only time the PlayStation 5 had beaten the Nintendo Switch in Japan was in its launch week, when it managed to sell 2,000 more units than the Nintendo Switch.

The PlayStation 5 overthrows the eternal king of Japan, Nintendo Switch

The feat was repeated in week 43 of 2022, which ran from October 24 to 30. According to the report of Famitsu (via Gematsu), in that week the Nintendo Switch family of consoles (original model, Lite and OLED) sold a total of 38,634 units.

However, the PlayStation 5 in its 2 models managed to sell 38,866 units. That’s right, just for 232 more consoles, PlayStation ended the legendary streak of the Nintendo Switch once again, which it had kept since November 16, 2020.

It is important to say that sales of the original PlayStation 5 model in Japan have gone from 18,000 to 26,000 units in recent weeks, so sales are on the rise, around 8,000 more consoles per week.

In case you missed it: PlayStation 5 has already sold millions in Japan, but at a slower pace than PlayStation 4.

The reign of Nintendo Switch in Japan is over

We must also take into account that we are comparing a console that has been on the market for just 2 years with one that will be 6 years old next March.

Of course, we have to remember that unlike the Nintendo Switch, the PlayStation 5 had a difficult debut not only in Japan, but in various parts of the world due to the pandemic, as it was affected by a shortage of semiconductors and deficiencies in production and unprecedented distribution, which has also affected its competitor Xbox Series X|S.

Because the supply did not meet the demand, in Japan even stores had to organize raffles to choose the lucky customers who would be entitled to buy a PlayStation 5.

In recent months, although the situation has improved a bit in general for everyone, PlayStation has not had an easy time in Japan, since this market suffered from the price increase of the PlayStation 5, something that was badly received by users of the region to such an extent that some mentioned that they preferred to buy a PC.

All in all, we can say that this is a great achievement for Sony and PlayStation and, given the improvement in the distribution and production of consoles, we have no doubt that it will appear more often in the first place of sales in Japan.

Bayonetta 3 did not reach the first place of sales

As for sales of games in physical format, there are a few special mentions, since 6 games debuted last week. Only 2 managed to reach the podium, but none managed to beat the legendary Splatoon 3which continues to sell very well despite the fact that it has been on the market for a few weeks.

Bayonetta 3 he was the closest contender, with 41,285 units; Star Ocean: The Divine Force it took home the bronze medal by selling 27,001 copies. Keep in mind that both debutants went on sale over the weekend, so they didn’t have more than 4 days to amass sales.
