The Iraqi prime minister, Mostafá al Kazemi, has threatened this Tuesday to present his resignation if the “chaos” that broke out on Monday after the announcement of the Shiite cleric Muqtada al Sadr that he was retiring from politics persists.
Al Kazemi has defended in a speech to the nation that he has never been “part of the political problem” in Iraq and has been “patient” with those who, in his opinion, have sought to weaken public institutions through “blackmail”.
The president has stated that he has no intention of giving up his current responsibilities and that, instead, he is in favor of a transfer of powers to the use, but has suggested that he will not maintain this position if the current tensions escalate.
Thus, he has warned those who want to “continue fomenting chaos and conflict” that they may not end up listening to “the voice of reason” and resigning “at the right time”, according to statements collected by Rudaw.
More than 30 people have died since Monday due to the mobilizations of Al Sadr supporters. The prime minister has promised that his government will investigate the deaths, which involves identifying who opened fire during the protests and for what reasons.
