Iraqi teenager arrested in Vienna after attack against Taylor Swift was thwarted

(Reuters) – An 18-year-old Iraqi citizen was arrested in Vienna in connection with investigations into an alleged plot to attack a Taylor Swift concert in the Austrian capital, the Interior Ministry reported on Friday.

The Iraqi citizen apparently belonged to the same circle as the main suspect, a 19-year-old Austrian with North Macedonian roots, according to the ministry.

The main suspect, who had sworn allegiance to the Islamic State (IS), was planning a lethal assault among the 20,000 “Swiftie” fans gathering in front of the Ernst Happel stadium in Vienna.

The American pop star had concerts planned in Vienna on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. All three were canceled late Wednesday for security reasons.

Two other Austrian youths, aged 17 and 15, were arrested on Wednesday for the alleged plot.

The 15-year-old boy has been released and is being treated as a witness, the Kurier newspaper reported on Friday.

The Iraqi suspect reportedly pledged allegiance to IS on August 6, but it is unclear if he had anything to do with the planned attack, according to the agency.

This is a developing story that will be updated.
