MADRID 17 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Iraqi authorities announced this Wednesday the arrest of two alleged members of the Islamic State jihadist group in a new military operation, amid increased activities by security forces against terrorist cells in the Asian country.
The Iraqi Media Security Cell, linked to the Ministry of Defense, has explained that one of the jihadists has been detained in the Sulaymaniyah governorate, in Iraqi Kurdistan, and that the second has been arrested in the Saladin governorate.
“In continuation of the tireless efforts of the heroes of the Anti-Terrorist Service in the search for terrorist gangs of the Islamic State, they have carried out a series of operations in several areas,” according to a statement published on their profile on the social network Facebook. .
As indicated by the agency, the agents have detonated a group of missiles and explosive materials in the governorate of Anbar, in the west of the country. “The operations of our security forces continue at a high pace to eliminate the remains of Islamic State groups in every centimeter of our territory,” he added.
The jihadist group retains several hundred fighters distributed in several traveling cells within Iraqi territory, where they have carried out several attacks in recent months, despite the territorial defeat of their ‘caliphate’ and the operations carried out by the forces security.
In fact, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) recognized in July that the group is reconstituting itself in Iraq and Syria and that it is recovering its capacity lost after the disappearance of the ‘caliphate’. In this sense, he said that the Islamic State had carried out more than 150 attacks in these two countries between January and June, so it could double the number of attacks in 2023 if it maintains the pace during the rest of the year.
