Iran's Foreign Minister travels to Damascus to show his support for Al Assad after the jihadist advance

MADRID Dec. 1 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, has reported that he will leave for Damascus to express his support for Syrian President Bashar al Assad, amid the uptick in attacks by the coalition formed by the jihadists of Hayat Tahrir al Sham ( HTS) and opposition groups in the northwest of the country.

“I am going to Damascus to bring the message of the Islamic Republic to the Syrian Government. We firmly support the Syrian Government and Army,” Araghchi said, according to the IRNA agency.

“We do not make any difference between the Zionist regime and the Takfiri terrorists, and we believe that the enemy is trying to implement its ominous objectives of destabilizing the region through these terrorist groups after the failure of the Zionist regime,” he said.

Araghchi has expressed his confidence that the Syrian Army “will once again defeat these terrorist groups” as it did in the past, he stressed.

The advance of the coalition of jihadists and groups opposed to the Syrian Government through the northwest of the country began in the middle of this week and has already led them to take control of a good part of Aleppo, the second most important city.

This is the most important assault in recent years, which has forced the Syrian Army to reinforce its defenses and redistribute its troops after the front lines have been practically frozen since 2020.
