The Foreign Minister of Iran, Abbas Araqchi, met this Monday in Oman with a senior official of the Houthi rebels, amid the outbreak of the conflict in the Middle East following the attacks carried out on October 7, 2023 against Israel by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and other Palestinian factions.

Araqchi has published on his Telegram account several photographs of his meeting with the head of the negotiating team of the authorities established by the rebels in Yemen, Mohamad Abdelsalam, without details about the meeting having been revealed for now.

The Houthis have launched dozens of missiles and drones at Israel over the past year and attacked dozens of ships in the Red Sea and Indian Ocean, in what they describe as part of a campaign to pressure Israel to end its offensive. against the Gaza Strip and its subsequent invasion of Lebanon.

The group, backed by Tehran, has controlled the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, and part of the country since 2014, being one of the main elements of the so-called ‘axis of resistance’ led by Iran in the region, which also includes Iraqi militias, Hamas. and the Lebanese Shiite militia party Hezbollah.

Araqchi, who arrived in Muscat on Sunday night, also met during the day with his Omani counterpart, Badr bin Hamad al Busaidi, to address “very rich discussions” on “matters of mutual interest and concern”, as confirmed its spokesperson, Esmaeil Baqaei.

“They have exchanged views on the alarming situation in the region and have called for an immediate end to the genocide and aggression by the Israeli regime against Gaza and Lebanon,” he said through his account on the social network X.

In this sense, he highlighted that Araqchi and Al Busaidi “have stressed the need to intensify efforts to mobilize the delivery of international humanitarian aid to refugees” due to the Israeli attacks.

Araqchi’s trip to Oman is part of his diplomatic tour in the region, which included a stop in Iraq over the weekend, where he addressed “the sensitive security situation in the region” and called for “intensifying joint efforts” to ” protect regional peace and security.”
