At least 93 people died for capital execution in Iran in August, bringing the number of people who will end up in the hands of the executioner in 2024 to more than 400. This was the alarm raised yesterday by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), which reported more than double the number than in the previous month, July, and called on the authorities in Tehran to “immediately” stop the executions.

AZERBAIJAN
President Ilham Aliyev’s New Azerbaijan party won 68 of the 125 parliamentary seats in the early elections on 1 September, and another 44 seats were won by candidates favouring the majority. The remaining 12 seats will be represented by minor parties, which always support the president. Only one seat will be won by the opposition: Erkin Gadirli of the Republican Alternative.
