June 27 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Iranian presidential candidate Amirhosein Qazizadé Hashemi announced this Wednesday his withdrawal from the electoral race at the request of the Guardian Council, which is responsible for screening the candidacies presented, with the aim of “preserving the unity” of the Islamic revolution.
“In order to preserve the unity of the forces of the revolution and in response to the petition written in consensus by the Guardian Council of the revolution and some scholars and sympathizers, I hope that my other three brothers will also agree on the remaining time for the front of the revolution to strengthen,” Hashemi expressed on his X social network account.
He then expressed his gratitude to the Iranian authorities and hoped that the path of former President Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter accident in the province of West Azerbaijan (northwest), would continue “in the best way.”
After the resignation, the candidates still standing for the elections to be held next Friday are Said Jalili, Alireza Zakani, Mostafa Purmohamadi, Mohamad Baqer Qalibaf and Masud Pezeshkian, the latter apparently criticized by the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, considering that “he who shows the slightest opposition to the revolution (…) or the Islamic system, is neither useful nor good” for the population, after the reformist politician’s criticism of the repression of the protests unleashed after the death of Mahsa Amini and her request to return to the 2015 nuclear agreement.
