Iranian leader pardons and reduces sentences for more than 2,600 prisoners

June 16 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Iranian leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has granted pardon or reduced sentences to 2,654 prisoners to celebrate the Muslim festivities of the Muslim Feast of Sacrifice (Eid al Adha) and the specifically Shiite Eid al Ghadir.

Khamenei’s pardon is based on a letter from the president of the Supreme Court of Iran, Gholamhosein Mohseni Ejei with a list of prisoners candidates for pardon. There were those convicted of common crimes and also in revolutionary courts.

Up to 29 death row inmates have had their sentences commuted to prison, according to the Iranian judicial news agency Mizan. In addition there are 30 foreign citizens and six of them are under 18 years of age.
