The Iranian Justice has reported this Thursday that a Swiss citizen accused of “espionage” has committed suicide in a prison in the province of Semnan within the framework of the increase in detentions of foreigners in the country, accentuated by the anti-government protests that broke out. in September 2022.

“This Swiss citizen was detained by security agencies for a crime of espionage. There is documentation on this issue and his case was being examined and processed,” said the president of the province’s Supreme Court, Mohamed Sadegh Ajbari.

The Iranian Justice, however, has not given more details about his identity or the circumstances that led to his death, as reported this Thursday by the Mizan Online news portal, linked to the country’s judicial apparatus.

The head of communications for the Swiss Foreign Ministry, Nicolas Bideau, has indicated on social networks that Tehran has informed Bern of the death of the prisoner. “We are in contact with the authorities to clarify the circumstances of the death,” he indicated in a brief message.
