Iranian general says Israel 'should not dream' that Iran 'will not respond' to Haniyeh assassination

September 5 (EUROPA PRESS) –

A senior Iranian army general has said Israel “should not dream that Iran will not respond” to the July assassination in Tehran of the then head of the political wing of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), Ismail Haniyeh.

“The Zionist regime should not dream that Iran will not respond to this atrocity,” said the number two in the Iranian Armed Forces General Staff, Ali Abdolahi, who insisted that Tehran “has demonstrated its willingness to deploy all its capabilities to respond to enemy violations of its territory and waters.”

He recalled that Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has said in the past that the authorities will give a “harsh response” to Haniyeh’s assassination, according to the Iranian news agency Tasnim. “The timing of the response will be decided by the leader and the country’s commanders,” Abdolahi said.

Haniyeh, who had headed Hamas’s political wing since 2017, was killed on July 31 in an attack on the building where he was staying in the Iranian capital, Tehran, an attack blamed on Israel and which has led Iran to threaten a harsh response.
