The Government of Iran has announced that it will create a section of interests in Albania through Turkey, after Tirana announced in September 2022 its decision to cut its ties after blaming Tehran for a computer attack suffered in July of that year.
Iranian Foreign Minister Hosein Amirabdolahian discussed bilateral relations and the situation in the region on Saturday with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu, a conversation in which “the creation of a section of Iranian interests in Albania was agreed through from Turkey”.
Amirabdolahian thanked Ankara “for its valuable efforts towards this goal,” according to a statement published by the Iranian Foreign Ministry through its website, without the Albanian authorities having ruled on the matter for now.
The Government of Albania announced in September the severance of diplomatic relations with Iran and ordered all Iranian diplomats to leave the country within 24 hours, following an investigation into a cyberattack registered last July.
“This extreme measure, not at all desired and totally forced, is directly proportional to the seriousness and danger of the cyberattack, which threatened to paralyze public services, destroy systems and steal state data,” said Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama. .
For its part, the Government of Iran regretted the “reckless and myopic” decision and warned that it is based on “unfounded claims” and “unproven.” Thus, he recalled that it is precisely Iran that is “the target of cyberattacks on its own critical infrastructure.”
