Iran Warns That IAEA Board Resolution Against It Will Affect Their Nuclear Cooperation

November 18 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Government of Iran has condemned a resolution approved against it by some countries of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), warning in turn that it will affect the process of solving technical problems with the nuclear agency of the UN.

The spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Nasser Kanaani, has described as “unacceptable” the measure approved by the United States, the United Kingdom, France and Germany, criticizing the lack of cooperation of the Middle Eastern country with the investigation of the UN nuclear entity on traces of uranium in at least three of its facilities, as reported by the IRNA agency.

According to Kanaani, the four countries’ proposal came as a delegation from Iran’s nuclear agency has been negotiating with the IAEA in recent weeks to “find practical solutions to complicated and technical safeguards problems.”

For this reason, the Iranian Executive has denounced the attempt by the four Western countries to “take advantage of recent situations” and exert more pressure on the country, events that “will negatively affect the process of resolving technical problems by the nuclear agency from the ONU”.

In this sense, the spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry has asked the member countries of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) — made up of 120 countries from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe — to vote against the resolution and “openly” express their position.

However, Iran has indicated that it is committed to “a comprehensive safeguards agreement” as well as continued cooperation with the IAEA under that agreement.

The resolution against Iran has been supported by 26 of the 35 members that make up the IAEA Board. China and Russia have opposed the move, while at least five countries have abstained, according to Bloomberg.
