The Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned the South Korean ambassador to Iran, Yun Kanghyeon, on Wednesday in protest after South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol spoke of the “threat” posed by Tehran to the United Arab Emirates ( UAE) during a visit to the country.
The decision has been made in light of the “interventionist statements by the South Korean president in the UAE, the country’s ambassador has been summoned by the Foreign Ministry,” he indicated, according to the ISNA news agency.
The spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Naser Kanani, has indicated that Yoon’s words show a “complete lack of knowledge about Iran’s historical relations with the Persian Gulf countries, including the UAE.”
Yoon’s comments came during a visit to South Korean military personnel in the country, in which he called Iran “the UAE’s enemy and one of its biggest threats.”
However, the South Korean government has asked not to misinterpret the statements in question and has indicated that they were made in order to “encourage the military.” “It has nothing to do with South Korea’s diplomatic relations with Iran or other states,” he said.
