The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Norwegian ambassador to Tehran, Sigvald Tomin Hauge, on Monday to protest the statements made by the president of the Norwegian Parliament, the Norwegian of Iranian origin Masud Gharahkhani, for his support for the protests in the country.
“Iran’s Foreign Ministry has summoned the Norwegian Ambassador to Tehran, Sigvald Tomin Hauge, to protest the unacceptable statements by the Speaker of the Norwegian Parliament against the Islamic Republic,” the official Iranian news agency, IRNA, reported.
Tehran has “strongly condemned” these statements and has described them as “interfering” in the internal affairs of the country.
Gharahkhani has expressed his support for the wave of protests in Iran after the death of a woman in custody after being arrested for not wearing the veil properly.
It is the second time that the Norwegian ambassador has been summoned to the Iranian Foreign Ministry for Gharahkhani’s statements about the protests.
Gharahkhani himself has assured this Monday on Twitter that he will continue to express himself in favor of the protests. “As president of the Storting (Parliament), I defend democracy, freedom and Human Rights. And I will continue to do so”, he has riveted.
