The Government of Iran has summoned this Thursday the charge d’affaires of France in Tehran for the “interventionist” position of Paris in the face of the mobilizations in the country after the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman who died in custody after being arrested for allegedly wear the veil wrong.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry has indicated in a statement on its website that the decision also comes due to “the participation of three French government advisers in the protests in Paris” and the “ridiculous actions of the magazine ‘Charlie Hebdo'”.
The protests in Paris have taken place as a show of solidarity with the Iranian demonstrators, while the aforementioned magazine has published a satirical cartoon on the matter with several women drinking, kissing or smoking on the heads of Iranian ayatollahs and the message ‘Goodbye to Islamism Welcome to Epicureanism’.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry has assured that it has conveyed to the French charge d’affaires Tehran’s “firm rejection” of French “interference” in the country’s internal affairs “through the use of false interpretations.”
Likewise, he has accused France of playing “a double game” by “accommodating groups directly involved in the disturbances of recent years in Iran” while “condemning the Iranian security forces for dealing with those responsible for these disturbances”.
In this sense, he has emphasized that “perhaps the French authorities have forgotten how firmly the Police of this country confronted the ‘yellow vests’, which altered order and security in the country”, before reiterating that ” does not tolerate interference in its internal affairs.”
The protests over Amini’s death have resulted in more than 40 deaths to date, according to official media. However, the non-governmental organization Iran Human Rights (IHR) raised the number of deaths in the mobilizations to 76 on Monday, including four children, and denounced that “most families were forced to discreetly bury their loved ones.” loved at night and pressured against holding public funerals”.
Amini was arrested on September 13 and died three days after falling into a coma after fainting in a detention center, amid allegations of torture and ill-treatment. Police have denied the allegations and Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has promised an investigation.
