Iran summons Australian ambassador to Tehran for spreading pro-LGBTQ message

Iran’s Foreign Ministry on Tuesday summoned Australia’s ambassador to Tehran, Ian McConville, after the Australian diplomatic mission in the country disseminated a message in favour of the LGBT community, an issue considered “offensive” to the Iranian authorities.

The ministry has thus expressed its protest against the actions of the Australian Embassy, ​​which it has accused of publishing content that “breaks the rules” and has strongly condemned these actions. “This content is offensive and contrary to Islamic and Iranian principles. It is necessary to prevent this from happening again,” the ministry said in a statement.

In this regard, he warned that this type of action by the Embassy “is contrary to international law and the Vienna Convention, which governs the behaviour of political representatives when it comes to respecting the rules and regulations of the host government.”

However, the Australian embassy stressed that it did not seek to insult the people or values ​​of Iranian society and stressed that the country was not named in the message in question, which was disseminated with the aim of creating a “safe environment for all, especially for LGBT communities.”

The ambassador said that the Iranian authorities’ concerns would be conveyed to the Australian government.
