The US State Department said on Tuesday that Iran sent military drones to Ethiopia in the summer of 2021, in what would have been a new violation of the United Nations Security Council resolution that prohibits Tehran from sending military technology to Ethiopia. unless you have prior approval.
The deputy spokesman for the US State Department, Vedant Patel, maintained at a press conference on Tuesday that Washington informed the United Nations of the evidence they had on the delivery of the aforementioned military aerial vehicles.
“We have informed the UN about Iran’s transfer of unmanned aerial vehicles (…) to Ethiopia last summer,” he explained before clarifying that he will not make public statements about this information.
In this sense, Patel has reiterated the violation of the UN Security Council resolution. “This type of transfer would fall under this restriction and would be subject to it”, he has indicated when referring to the United Nations document.
The office led by Antony Blinken has made reference to this fact -which would be the first government confirmation that drones had been deployed in the Ethiopian conflict-, at a time when Patel reiterated Tehran’s complicity in various conflicts violating international standards, citing the use of Russian troops in Ukraine or in the Yemen war.
These statements have been made in response to questions from journalists, who insisted on why the United States did not denounce the Iranian violation by supplying drones in previous wars until it has occurred on Ukrainian territory.
