Iran sends its response to Borrell's proposal for a new nuclear agreement and predicts that there will be an agreement

Aug. 15 () –

The Iranian Government has sent, as it had announced at midnight on Monday, its response to the proposal of the High Representative for Foreign Policy of the EU, Josep Borrell, to renew the 2015 nuclear agreement and an “informed source” has expressed its optimism about the options for the deal to materialize.

The semi-official news agency ISNA has reported, citing an “informed source” that “it has confirmed the sending of the response to Josep Borrell, the coordinator of the nuclear negotiations”, without the content of this response having been revealed for the time being.

“This informed source has also explained that (Iran) expects a response from the other side in the next two days,” according to the ISNA agency.

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Hosein Amirabdolahian, had explained on Monday that “in the coming days” there would be a rapprochement “if the United States demonstrates a realistic approach and flexibility.”

“We have clearly told the United States that we are ready to announce the agreement and that we will have a meeting of foreign ministers in Vienna with the final conclusions if our last points are met,” he added in statements to the press.

Amirabdolahian has stated that Tehran is willing to compromise “on some things” in order to win others, which would open the door to concessions on key issues such as impartial inspections of nuclear facilities.

In addition, Amirabdollahian has defended the extension of the negotiations because “the government has decided not to link the life of the Iranian people with the negotiations.” “Iran has no problem reaching an agreement and that is why the negotiations have been prolonged, always taking into account that the Iranian ‘red lines’ are respected,” he argued.

Later, a spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Nasser Kanaani, clarified that negotiations on sanctions against Iran continue. “We have had intense negotiations and we have made relative progress,” he explained, according to the Iranian news agency IRNA.

The EU, which acts as a mediator in these negotiations, has put on the table a proposal that is expected to be the last to save the agreement, from which the United States distanced itself under the Presidency of Donald Trump. Tehran has also taken steps backwards, as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed.
