Iran’s government said on Monday that diplomatic channels with the United States “are open” and that negotiations are underway to revive the 2015 nuclear deal, damaged by Washington’s decision to unilaterally withdraw from it in 2018.
“Diplomatic channels between Iran and the United States are open and the negotiation process is underway. Details will be made public in due course,” said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Naser Kanani, adding that Tehran is working to protect the rights of its citizens.
He also said that the authorities would “use all their capabilities to safeguard” these interests, after the Iranian president-elect, the reformist Masud Pezeshkian, promised during his electoral campaign to work to try to achieve the withdrawal of the sanctions imposed by the United States against the country, according to the Iranian news agency Tasnim.
Iran has announced that it has broken its commitments on several points of the 2015 nuclear deal, although it has maintained that these steps can be reversed if the United States lifts its sanctions and re-applies the clauses of the historic agreement. However, the contacts have not led to a rapprochement so far.
