Iran reopens its airports after suspending flights after Tuesday's attacks on Israel

MADRID 3 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Iranian authorities reopened their airports to traffic this Thursday, after suspending air operations following the attack launched on Tuesday by Iranian forces against Israel, amid the rise in tensions in the Middle East and amid fears about the outbreak of a large scale war.

The spokesman for the Civil Aviation Organization of Iran, Yafar Yazarlu, has indicated that the decision has been adopted “after ensuring that there are favorable and safe flight conditions.” “The restrictions have been ended and airlines are allowed to carry out flight operations from 5:00 a.m. (local time).”

The attacks, in which nearly 180 ballistic missiles were launched, were described by Tehran as a response to the death of the leader of the political wing of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), Ismail Haniye, in an attack in Tehran at the end of July. and that of the Secretary General of Hezbollah, Hasan Nasrallah, in an Israeli bombing against the capital of Lebanon, Beirut.

Likewise, they arrived hours after Israel announced the beginning of an invasion of Lebanon after more than eleven months of fighting with Hezbollah, unleashed following the attacks carried out on October 7, 2023 by Hamas and other Palestinian factions, which caused some 1,200 dead. In response to these assaults, Israel launched a bloody offensive against Gaza that has already left nearly 41,700 Palestinians dead.

After the attack, the Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces, Herzi Halevi, asserted that the Israeli authorities will respond to Iran with an attack that demonstrates the country’s “precise and surprising” capabilities. For his part, Iranian President Masud Pezeshkian warned Israel against open conflict and defended the Iranian response to Israeli actions in the region.
