The Iranian government is contemplating the possibility of proposing to Iraq the creation of a “joint international tribunal” to judge the death of Iranian general Qasem Soleimani, considered the shadow architect of the Islamic republic’s international military policy, and the Iraqi militia leader Abu Mahdi al Muhandis in a US attack on the Baghdad airport in January 2020.
The idea has been recognized by the head of the Iranian committee specializing in the case, Abbas Ali Kadjodaie. “If we can establish a joint international tribunal, the case can be brought before international forums more quickly. Fortunately, given the communication that exists between the governments of both countries, this issue is already on the table,” he explained in comments collected by the official Iranian news agency IRNA.
The Iranian government this week accused the United States of blocking the investigation into the death of the general and Al Muhandis, ‘number two’ of the Popular Mobilization Forces (FMP), a coalition of Iraqi pro-government militias supported by Iran.
It must be remembered that Iran requested the Interpol police agency in January 2021 to issue a red alert to arrest former US President Donald Trump, whom Iran considers ultimately responsible for the death of the general, and 48 other people. allegedly involved in the bombing.
The then head of the Iranian judicial apparatus and current president of the country, Ebrahim Raisi, stressed that Trump “will have to pay” for the “atrocity” that the bombing entailed. The head of the investigative committee has elaborated on this idea: “It is very important that the Americans know that their movement was a criminal act for which they must assume responsibility,” said Kadjodaie.
